With the support of friends, family, the service club Sertoma and the local school district, Stepping Out for a Cure is participating once again in Alex’s Million Mile to raise awareness of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September). In addition to team members logging miles throughout the month, the team will have a community walk/run on September 13 at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, Texas. The mayor will kick off the event by reading a proclamation declaring September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Georgetown.

Stepping Out for a Cure is captained by Dash and Kumar, whose daughter, Ishani Sathianathan, was told that she had rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of childhood cancer, on June 16, 2006. At just 3, she underwent surgery, 4 weeks of radiation and 1 year of chemotherapy. Ishani was in remission for 18 months before relapsing in January of 2009. She underwent more surgery, 5 more weeks of radiation and another year of chemotherapy. Since that time, she has had frequent follow up scans and thankfully remains in remission.

Since her diagnosis, many more kids in Georgetown, TX have been diagnosed with cancer. The team hopes their efforts will help raise awareness in Georgetown and funds for much needed research, so every child with cancer will be given the hope of a cure.

Stepping Out for a Cure logged 10,000 miles last year during Alex’s Million Mile and raised $10,000, and this year they hope to exceed that!
