She had two brothers die from cancer when they were very young. One of them died at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, the same facility where Alex’s Lemonade Stand founder Alex Scott was hospitalized. Alex had neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer.
Gerard Blobe, MD, PhD, a professor of pharmacology and cancer biology and member of the Duke Cancer Institute, has been awarded a $250,000, two-year innovation grant from Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is dedicated to pediatric cancer. Blobe is investigating the use of heparin and its derivatives against neuroblastoma, the most common cancer in infancy.
