Anna is a kind and empathetic sister who loves reading, cooking, and all things University of Alabama. As the oldest of four siblings, she has always been a caretaker for her younger siblings – even while she’s away at college.
When Anna’s younger brother, Jack, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, it was hard to shoulder the sense of shock at school. She immediately asked what she could do to help, but her family wanted her to take care of things at college first. It would be so easy to shut down in isolation, but Anna needed to stay strong and take care of herself while she was away from home.
At home, Anna decided to donate 12 inches of hair in honor of Jack when she returned for Thanksgiving break. Over the years, Anna has donated her beautiful hair eight times to help children affected by cancer. Meanwhile, at school, she had some professors who were kind enough to check up on her in each class. Her faith-based community even gathered to pray the Rosary after Jack’s diagnosis.
It’s been helpful for Anna to talk to other young adults her age who are struggling with being away while a close family member is struggling with their health. Still, she feels grateful for the time she gets to spend at home on breaks to be there for her family in person.
