Two companies that operate restaurant chains within western Montgomery County will be honored later this month (April 27-28, 2015) by the Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association for what it describes as “outstanding community involvement and innovative community programs.”
At age 9, Christian West was diagnosed with Anaplastic Medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer found in the cerebellum.
There have only been 400 known cases of the disease, which predominantly affects children. The cancer leaves the child with about a 40 percent chance of survival, said Chelsea White, Christian's aunt.
A UPHA Chapter 15 Children's Benefit Horse Show will be held this weekend at the Gloucester County Dream Park. Alex's Lemonade Stand was inspired by a little girl named Alex who started a lemonade stand to raise money.
The idea of a lemonade stand to help raise money for pediatric cancer was the inspiration of a 4-year-old girl named Alex Scott in 2000. What started out as a single stand outside of her Connecticut home grew into a national horse-racing phenomenon in 2005, the year after Alex died.
Impressionable Years Child Care Center, 1041 Route 3 North, Suite 9, Gambrills, will host an open house from 3 to 6:30 p.m. April 10. There will be free face painting and a bake sale to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand to support childhood cancer research. Registration will be available for summer and fall 2015.
Lauren is bright, strong and mature - she's been through more than most kids her age and is still battling a low-grade glioma. She is currently attending college pursuing a nursing degree so she can help other kids with cancer.
