Your Students Can Go the Extra Mile for Kids with Cancer

Join The Million Mile This September

Looking to start your school year off on the right foot? Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation invites you and your students to join The Million Mile – an annual fundraiser that takes place form September 1-30, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Participants across the country track miles by walking, running, or cycling, and fundraise all along the way. Together, our goal is to log one million miles and raise millions for childhood cancer research. It’s an excellent event to increase student involvement and teach kids that they can make a difference, plus it’s free to sign up! Here are some tips to help you get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate?

Whether you’re teaching kindergarteners or high schoolers, anyone can take part in The Million Mile and help us reach our collective goals.

Should I sign up only my class, or the whole school?

You could do either! If you want to have your students sign up, start your Million Mile team, and ask parents to sign up their students. We even have a take home letter you can use (download that letter here). You could also set a fundraising and mileage goal for your whole school and see whose class can move the farthest and raise the most in September. You can even make The Million Mile a part of your spirit week by dedicating an awareness day or giving the class with the most miles/funds points.

How do I incorporate this into my classroom?

To help log miles, if your students are old enough to have smart watches or phones, they can track mileage automatically through MapMyFitness, Strava or FitBit apps. For younger students, we have a printout chart you can give each student to track their mileage for the day. You could track how long a lap around the playground and have your students keep track, or we have a conversion chart to help translate your students’ favorite activities into miles.

How do I get started?

All it takes to create your team is to register at TheMillionMile.org. Name your team, set a mileage and fundraising goal, and then your students can join. Mile tracking begins on September 1, but you can start fundraising right away.
