At just 8 months old, Ellie had been diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of soft tissue. She finished chemotherapy at 18 months old, but relapsed soon after. Today, little Ellie has been five years cancer-free! Her family, who had been there every step of the way, wanted to be a part of the change for other kids with cancer. They have raised more than $28,000 since 2016 with their lemonade stands, and have never looked back.
Ellie and her family’s favorite part of holding their stand is seeing friends and family stop by in person. They also love when people stop simply because they were driving by – it is always a great opportunity to share about Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Alex’s story and Ellie’s story.
“Ellie received the same treatment in 2016 and 2017, that she would have received in 1996,” said Tara, Ellie’s mom. “Childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded. Only 4% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers each year. Our kids deserve #MoreThan4.”
Tara’s Tip to Stand Hosts: “My advice for first timers: use social media. We’ve raised almost $30K over six years because of social media. When you get donations, make “thank you” posts and tag the people who donate. Then all of their friends will see the post and see that they donated. And peer pressure works!! People will donate when they see their friends are donating. Also, if you have or know a childhood cancer hero, share pictures from when they were or are in treatment. I have no shame in showing everyone the horrors of chemo and radiation for children. Tug on their heartstrings.”
