Welcome! I've never blogged, but I'm really committed to raising money for Alex's Lemonade Stand over the next 7 months while I train for my first half marathon and decided to try it occasionally to drum up some support. I'll keep you posted here on both my running and fundraising progress!
In 2005, I was working at Towson University and saw a feature on Alex's Lemonade Stand during the Kentucky Derby. I had the thought that it would be a great service project for our Campus Rec department and had some very supportive co-workers and a crew of fantastic students that were immediately on board! We launched a year-round project with Campus Rec and Athletics to raise money for ALSF, holding stands at athletic events and other campus activities.
One of the things I loved about our stand was meeting people who came to buy a cup of lemonade. We heard lots of personal stories about people affected by childhood cancer and saw some special acts of generosity. In particular, I remember working at a basketball game when a man came up to buy some lemonade. He asked us the cost and we replied that it was a donation--whatever he wanted to give. He sort of grunted at us and walked away without buying any lemonade...but later came back and put $50 in our jar without a word. Fantastic.
Since then, I've organized ALSF events at Princeton when working there and now get to share the experience with my daughters, who will be holding their second lemonade stand this June during the annual "Lemonade Days".
So why this project? I've been thinking about running a half marathon for a while. I have a lot of milestones in the next year or so--finishing nursing school, our tenth anniversary, turning 35 (!!)--and I decided that this was the time to stop thinking about it and DO it. Joining Team Lemon to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand as part of the experience seemed like a great way to give me extra motivation and spread the word about the cause.
I ran 8.5 miles last week--the longest I've ever run. I'm signed up for a 5K on Mother's Day and am working hard in the gym and out on the road. On the fundraising end, I have $990 to go, so anything you can give is appreciated! Don't forget, you can donate $10 immediately by texting lemonade E81187 to 85944.
Happy Spring, everyone! Stay tuned!
