Less than 3 months until November 10!  I hit my first training setback last month--started having severe ankle pain when running and at rest after participating in the Pitman 4th of July 4-mile race.  Since I've broken that ankle twice before, I opted to take a couple of weeks off and switch to the elliptical trainer!  The verdict is a chronically sprained ligament and the doctor's suggestion was to invest in a lace-up ankle brace and be cautious. I was back on the road by the end of July and am feeling good--fingers crossed!

On the fundraising front, I've passed my $1000 goal after some generous donations and some money that I brought in from selling some items on Ebay. Ebay has a partnership with MissionFish that allows you to designate a portion of proceeds from sales--so I managed to clean out some items and make some more money for ALSF! I'm planning to set a new goal of $1500 now.

Recently, I noticed that an old friend from high school was on Facebook and was excited to reconnect. Unfortunately, her daughter was just diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and she is undergoing treatment at CHOP. She writes daily updates and I am amazed and inspired by her positive attitude and her daughter's fight. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Happy end-of-summer!

Wow! I can't believe June is already in full swing--we're getting ready for the end of school, dance recitals and lots of other fun stuff! The last couple of weeks in May were a whirlwind. I completed nursing school and celebrated my 34th birthday, two big occasions!

Fundraising has been going very well--a HUGE "Thank You" to everyone that's donated thus far. I had an informal bake sale at school a couple of weeks back that netted $200, and am currently selling some items on Ebay and directing half the proceeds to my $1000 goal.  Anne and Cat will be hosting their own lemonade stand on June 16th from 1-5 (Cat's birthday!) and they've been advertising through school and our neighborhood.

Still plugging away at the running. I ran a decent 5K on Mother's Day and have been out on the road at least 3 times a week (MUCH easier now that I don't have schoolwork to contend with...). Had a nice hill workout last weekend in Virginia while visiting Donovan's family and shooting for 9+ miles for this weekend's long run. I've gotten back into a more regular weight training schedule and also added cardio cross-training--so I'm on the right path!  About 5 months to go!

This weekend is the national Alex's Lemonade Stand "Lemonade Days", with stands and other special events across the county commemorating Alex Scott's very first stand that started it all. It's a great time to donate, whether here or somewhere near you.

Welcome!  I've never blogged, but I'm really committed to raising money for Alex's Lemonade Stand over the next 7 months while I train for my first half marathon and decided to try it occasionally to drum up some support. I'll keep you posted here on both my running and fundraising progress!

In 2005, I was working at Towson University and saw a feature on Alex's Lemonade Stand during the Kentucky Derby.  I had the thought that it would be a great service project for our Campus Rec department and had some very supportive co-workers and a crew of fantastic students that were immediately on board! We launched a year-round project with Campus Rec and Athletics to raise money for ALSF, holding stands at athletic events and other campus activities.

One of the things I loved about our stand was meeting people who came to buy a cup of lemonade. We heard lots of personal stories about people affected by childhood cancer and saw some special acts of generosity.  In particular, I remember working at a basketball game when a man came up to buy some lemonade. He asked us the cost and we replied that it was a donation--whatever he wanted to give. He sort of grunted at us and walked away without buying any lemonade...but later came back and put $50 in our jar without a word.  Fantastic.

Since then, I've organized ALSF events at Princeton when working there and now get to share the experience with my daughters, who will be holding their second lemonade stand this June during the annual "Lemonade Days".

So why this project?  I've been thinking about running a half marathon for a while. I have a lot of milestones in the next year or so--finishing nursing school, our tenth anniversary, turning 35 (!!)--and I decided that this was the time to stop thinking about it and DO it.  Joining Team Lemon to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand as part of the experience seemed like a great way to give me extra motivation and spread the word about the cause.

I ran 8.5 miles last week--the longest I've ever run.  I'm signed up for a 5K on Mother's Day and am working hard in the gym and out on the road.  On the fundraising end, I have $990 to go, so anything you can give is appreciated! Don't forget, you can donate $10 immediately by texting lemonade E81187 to 85944.

Happy Spring, everyone!  Stay tuned!
