September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (2024 Get Involved Guide)

Each September, we work to make the world make an impact for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is a month when Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) builds awareness, raises funds, and shares the hope for cures and safer treatments that lies in research. Despite accounting for more than 17% of childhood deaths in the United States, childhood cancer is considered a rare disease. Government research funding is limited, leaving us to fill in the gap for the nearly 17,000 children diagnosed in the United States each year and the more than 400,000 children diagnosed worldwide.

All month long you can lend your support and voice to children impacted by cancer all over the world. Here’s your guide to how you can make a difference for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September, and beyond!

1.    Share Your Story

Has childhood cancer impacted your life? Share your story and the way childhood cancer impacted your life with your social media networks. If you are a parent of a child who faced cancer or a survivor yourself, you can submit your hero story here. Siblings can share their stories, too.

2.    Get Moving and Sign up for The Million Mile

You can make a difference with every step in September! Throughout the month, participants of all ages, all over the world, log miles while raising money to help kids with cancer. Our goal is to collectively move a million miles! You can register here and join The Million Mile today (it’s free to join!).

3.    Know the Facts and Share the Facts

Did you know that most types of childhood leukemia have a 90% cure rate? Or that pediatric brain tumors are the deadliest form of childhood cancer? Take a look at our Childhood Cancer Fact Library, updated for 2024, to learn more about childhood cancer and why research is so important. Our fact library includes an infographic you can share on social media.

4.   Get Social

In addition to sharing the facts and sharing your story, we have an entire toolkit of childhood cancer awareness social media graphics, post suggestions, and more on our website! Download your favorites and share all month long to inspire others.

5.    Wear Your Awareness

Take a look through Alex’s Shop and wear your childhood cancer awareness. From t-shirts and hoodies to hats and car magnets, Alex’s Shop has everything you need to be decked out in awareness! And from September 2 to 6, you can save 20% off with discount code CCAM2024.

6.    Learn About the Research

Childhood cancer research works! Greta, who was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just 3 months old, was desperate for a cure after traditional treatment failed. Lucky for Greta, an ALSF-funded researcher had an open clinical trial for CAR-T immunotherapy. Nine years later and Greta is a thriving 10-year-old. Learn more about her story here and read our Fall 2024 Newsletter to learn more about the impact of our research grants.

7.   Make a Sustaining Impact

Join the more than 1,400 members of our One Cup at a Time Club who give what they can each month to support research that gives kids with cancer a chance at new treatments. Those gifts mean that, month after month, our One Cup members are bringing researchers closer to cures. We invite you to become our newest member. (And you get a fantastic welcome gift of your choosing! Sign up here.)

8.   Plan a Lemonade Stand

Our founder, Alex Scott, started the movement to end childhood cancer with a front yard lemonade stand! September is a perfect time to set up a lemonade stand in your front yard. Ready to get going? Here’s how to sign up (and you can get a free kit to make lemonade standing even easier!).

9.   Create Your Team for the End Childhood Cancer Walk/Run

Sign up for the most inspiring Halloween 5K, the End Childhood Cancer Walk/Run held on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard’s Marine Parade Grounds! Come dressed in costume for this fun and festive event and you could win awards for Most Creative Costume, Best Group Costume, Best Pet Costume, and Best Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation-Themed Costume!
