Learn More »Shelby is a free spirit. She’s fun, caring, energetic and has a huge imagination. She loves helping people, playing outside on her playset, or watching Frozen, Trolls or My Little Pony. Pink and purple are her favorite colors and her favorite animals are butterflies and unicorns. Her go-to food is Wendy’s, especially while she’s in treatment.
In 2019, at 4 years old, Shelby was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It’s been a long and difficult experience for her. She’s spent a month in the hospital and undergone weeks of chemotherapy. Currently she is in the maintenance phase which is thankfully less harsh on her body, but must receive a spinal tap every nine weeks and is put on steroids every three weeks.
Despite all Shelby has gone through in the last year, she pushes through like a boss and smiles even on days when she doesn’t feel good. That is what makes her a hero to her mom, Samantha.
Samantha has high hopes that once this is done Shelby will lead a long and healthy life. She wants other childhood cancer parents to know that there will be some hard times and rough days, but there can be light at the end of the tunnel. The five-year window where doctors are keeping close watch over Shelby’s condition is nerve-wracking, but will be worth it in the end.
To Samantha and her family, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation brings hope that a cure will be found for all cancers. It also brings smiles to kids’ faces especially when they aren’t feeling the best. It is the greatest medicine they need.
Hero quote: “The best days are yet to come once all this is over and done.” – Unknown
