Get the facts about Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and how our research projects are making a difference.
Learn More »Mya was born in August of 2002 and embraced life immediately. She seemed to walk and talk faster than many of her peers. She grabbed life and ran, always looking for new experiences and new friends. She grew to enjoy soccer immensely and school. She is an absolute treasure.
Late in October of 2007, our world changed forever when Mya (a then 5-year-old Kindergarten student) was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, T-Cell Stage 3. Immediately, she was hospitalized and commenced a two year intensive chemotherapy protocol of treatment, starting with PICC Lines until the mass in her sternum was radiated and reduced, enabling the insertion of a Port. She never complained, not that she had lost the opportunity to attend school, play sports, go to birthday parties, have sleepovers, and sometimes even leave the hospital. Then, nearly at our 2 year mark of treatment and a few months shy of putting this nightmare behind us, Mya was dealt another blow; the treatment of her lymphoma caused her to acquire secondary AML, a very aggressive form of leukemia that required a Stem Cell Transplant.
Again, Mya was admitted into the hospital, beginning an even stronger dose of chemotherapy treatments, and full body radiation preparing her for her transplant in November of 2009 (shortly after her 7th birthday, and entrance into the 2nd grade). Here she is, the same bubbly little girl, waiting for her "green" lights to attend cancer camp, to go back to school, and to get back onto the soccer field. She is my hero - she never stumbles, she never fails and she has the strength to carry our entire family every day. She is the strongest and most beautiful person I have ever met and I am honored to have her as my daughter.
