Emerson is all about unicorns and rainbows and never about eating her vegetables. This spunky chicken-nugget-loving girl inspires others with her drawings, paintings, and notes for friends near and far. But more than that, Emerson inspires others with her fighting spirit at almost 9 years old.

On April 27, 2018, Emerson began experiencing chest and back pains, paired with a fever. After a trip to the hospital and X-rays yielding no results, Emerson was sent home. With symptoms persisting she returned to the hospital two days later and received blood testing. This time there were results. A doctor escorted Emerson and her family to a small room where their lives were turned upside down. The doctor announced that Emerson had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Emerson needed to be transported immediately to begin treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She currently has two more rounds of intense chemotherapy before finishing regular chemo in November 2020.

Through it all, Emerson’s mom hopes her daughter realizes how brave and strong she truly is. Emerson has been such a fighter. Because she has such a kind heart, Emerson’s mom knows that she will move through life with determination and love.

Emerson is her family’s hero because she has overcome many hurdles since her diagnosis. The strength she’s shown has made her family stronger too. Every day, Emerson shines her light and pushes herself to be better and do better. Her immense love and empathy inspire everyone she knows, and her family cannot wait to see the great things that she will do in the world by helping others once she is through this.

For families in a similar situation, Emerson’s parents want them to know that although the uncertainty is scary, knowledge and growth will help you navigate through this devastating situation. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid.

Emerson and her family hope that with the help of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) there will be education and awareness brought to childhood cancer. They feel that having organizations like ALSF will improve the quality of life for many and one day, may make the dream of a world without cancer a reality.
