Meet Eden: The Overcomer
Eden was diagnosed with a rare tumor at just 10 years old. Her tumor had never been seen before, so her doctors named it after her: Eden’s tumor. Without a standard treatment plan, ALSF-funded researcher Dr. Jennifer Foster of Texas Children’s Hospital turned to existing research for insights. She discovered similar traits between Eden’s tumor and two other childhood cancers, leading her to design a chemotherapy treatment plan that was effective against those cancers.
Even before her cancer fight, Eden would say, “Mom, I’m an overcomer,” referring to one of her favorite songs. She kept that mentality after her diagnosis, during surgery and through seven difficult months of chemotherapy.
It worked for a while, but then Eden relapsed. Dr. Foster again turned to the research for insights.
Eden, now 13 years old, is currently enrolled in an ALSF-funded clinical trial for children with relapsed solid tumors. The trial, led by Dr. Foster, combines traditional chemotherapy with an additional drug—an enzyme inhibitor—that is designed to stop tumor cells from replicating. Eden is just the 10th patient nationally to receive this treatment, but so far, the results have been positive.
Eden wants to be done with cancer and she and her family trusts that research will lead the way to better treatments and more cures.
Why give to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation?
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE for children, like Eden, who want more opportunities to receive potentially lifesaving treatments and hope for a brighter, healthier future.
YOUR GIFT will fund the most promising, innovative scientific projects with the likelihood of making an impact.
YOUR SUPPORT allows Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to continue to fund researchers around the country to develop less-toxic treatments and more cures for kids with cancer.
Our national partner, Northwestern Mutual, has generously offered to match your donation and all donations (up to $150,000) through December 31st, 2018. We appreciate their partnership in the fight against childhood cancer.
Thank you!
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was recently named one of Charity Navigator’s "10 Best Medical Research Organizations" in the U.S.’ -- 84 cents for every dollar is given directly to research and programs to help kids fight cancer.
