In 2016, brain tumors became the #1 disease killer of children in the United States, passing leukemia. Every day 9 kids are diagnosed with a brain tumor. Of those diagnosed, only 66% will survive 5 years, with many types of brain tumors being deemed terminal at diagnosis. Childhood cancers on the whole are underfunded and when funding is split among all cancer types, there is very little funding available for research to find a cure.
What: Raising awareness and funding for pediatric brain tumor research
When: May 7, 2017
Who: Churches (congregations, Sunday school classes, Youth Groups)
Why: We want to stand up with these families and lift these children to God during a special time in service on May 7, 2017. We encourage churches across the country to join in unity with these families to show that they are not alone and that the body of Christ sees them, hears their cries, and will diligently join in prayer.
Ideas for inclusion in service:
· Wear Gray Special awareness t-shirts and ribbons will be available for purchase or just wear your own gray in support.
· Bulletin Insert A bulletin insert will be provided with facts and statistics to help raise awareness of pediatric brain tumors.
· Special Announcement During announcements, a church representative can briefly explain why this time is important. Talking points will be provided.
· Special Prayer A written prayer will be provided or churches can say their own prayer for the children and families affected.
· Offering, Lemonade Stand, Fundraising Lunch Donations can be taken during a special offering or by having an offering plate available specifically for donations. Churches could also get involved by holding a lemonade stand or luncheon after the church service and ask for donations be given at that time.
