Energetic, happy, loving and brave, Jacob is 5.

After a growth was found on Jacob, he was referred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but his biopsy was sent to Vanderbilt for review because it was such a rare case. Ultimately, Jacob was diagnosed with pleomorohic sarcoma and he underwent limb sparing surgery, physical therapy and 37 radiation treatments.

Jacob was brave and cheerful throughout his cancer treatment. His mom marveled, “As parents, we all think that our children are amazing. Jacob showed my husband and I just how amazing our little boy is.” She advises other families who may have recently received a cancer diagnosis to keep their faith, ask as many questions as they need to, live one day at a time and stay positive. “You may be afraid, but do not let it consume you.”

Wonderfully, Jacob is now in remission – his first round of scans were clear! Because his type of cancer has a high rate of recurrence, he will have follow-up scans every three months.

Jacob’s family hopes that ALSF will help raise awareness of childhood cancer, because no child should have to experience cancer. His mom hopes that maybe Jacob will go into medicine someday and be able to use his experience and compassion to help others.
