Learn More »On the Fourth of July in 2011, Trey Roy’s family planned to take part in tradition and go watch the fireworks. Trey had been experiencing leg and back pain for a few months, but on this evening it became so unbearable that his family skipped the fireworks and instead drove to the Emergency Room, where they got news that was even more explosive: a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Trey received a yearlong intensive treatment for his cancer. Just when he finished intensive treatment and the road ahead seemed smoother, he developed a fungal infection in his port. For 43 days he experienced high fevers that required his family to pack him in ice to cool him down. Finally, after a liver biopsy, doctors found the cause of the infection. He has since had two surgeries to remove his infected port. Happily, he has been in remission since August 5, 2011.
The journey since diagnosis has been long and hard, but his family has marveled at Trey’s strength and bravery and taken comfort in faith and in the milestones, achievements and accomplishments reached along the way. Trey’s mom remarks that “seeing the progression of your child go from ‘normal’ to ‘cancer patient’ is hard, and heartbreaking. But the transition from ‘cancer patient’ to ‘normal’ is heartwarming.”
His mom looks forward to the day when Trey will be able to live his life normally like any other 7-year-old child. Trey missed out on a lot of activities and experiences when he was so sick, although he continued to play baseball even at his lowest refusing to quit. He also likes video games, Power Rangers, The Avengers, X-Men, Little Einsteins and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has a special love and playfulness with children younger than him and an amazing laugh.

Update, Summer 2015: Trey relapsed Decber 18th 2013. He is currently still under treatment. He is due to complete treatment in January/February 2016, barring any complications.
