On Saturday, Aug. 1, as shoppers inside Five Below in Rockaway Township were picking up summer items or looking for back-to-school necessities, 5-year-old Olivia Phillips and her 6-year-old brother, Will, were outside the store manning their Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
The stand represents a charity that was set up by Alexandra "Alex" Scott to raise funds that go towards research for childhood cancers, and also to help their families with the expenses of treatments and traveling.
Alex passed away at the age of 8 from neuroblastoma and set up the foundation while she was battling her illness.
Amy and Bill Phillips of Rockaway Township said that their children chose Alex’s Lemonade Stand because they recently lost some special people to the illness. The kids came up with the idea and wanted to help.
The family built the stand from scraps of wood and paint left over from projects around their home.
