Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) grew from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was just 4 years old when she announced she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer.
After hearing about Scott’s efforts in 2004, Kansas Citian Jacob Mozer, then a 7-year-old in remission from cancer, wanted to do the same and hosted his first Alex’s Lemonade Stand at a Blue Springs HyVee. That local fundraising effort has now expanded to include 600 volunteers, and last year hundreds of local volunteers teamed up to raise $100,000, pushing the efforts to surpass the $1 million raised marked in the local area. Monies raised have funded grants at Children’s Mercy, The University of Kansas Medical Center and Stower’s Institute.
Thirsty for a way to help? Midwest Lemonade Days, the largest collective Alex’s Lemonade Stand event in the history of the Kansas City region, celebrates its 12th year raising money for childhood cancer research June 5 – 6 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at all Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan and St. Joseph-area Hy-Vee stores.
