The way 7-year-old Nicholas DaSilva, a resident of the Stockholm section of Hardyston, was bouncing around Sunday, you'd have thought he was impersonating a Mexican jumping bean rather than recovering from cancer.

He's traveled a long road in his short life, having first been diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma at 5 years old in November 2013.

Now firmly in remission, Nicholas — along with his mom, dad and two older brothers — did double duty over the weekend as foot soldiers in the war against childhood cancer, first participating in the Valerie Fund Walk and 5K Run Saturday in Verona and then manning a lemonade and bake sale on Sunday.

Founded in 1976 in memory of 9-year-old Valerie Goldstein, the Valerie Fund supports a network of treatment centers for children with cancer and blood disorders, including the one at Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical Center where Nicholas continues to go for bloodwork every two months.
