Frisco Lone Star High School Graduate Channels Love for Cooking into Charitable Cause

Growing up, Madison Callaghan loved Food Network stars.

“When I was younger, I watched Rachael Ray a lot and got a lot of her cookbooks,” she said.

Over time, she started taking food more seriously, signing up for cooking classes whenever she could.

In April, Callaghan took her love for cooking one step further by planning a benefit dinner for charity, the culmination of work she had done in her independent study and mentorship, or ISM, program at Lone Star High School, from where she recently graduated. The event raised $2,500 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, which raises money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, particularly research for new treatments and cures. It was held in honor of Julia Brown, a 10-year-old from Frisco who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013.

Callaghan’s ISM course began in the fall. Students choose a career field and research topics of interest in the field. Callaghan, with her love for food and cooking, chose the culinary arts.
