There was a time three years ago, if only for a short while, that Dateireus White resigned himself to the fact that he was going to die.
But you couldn’t tell that now. White — his friends and family call him Dee — is now a 15-year-old South Point High School student. He’s also a two-time cancer survivor.
He and his family, all from Belmont, have been selected as one of just 50 “Hero Families” nationwide by the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization dedicated to funding research on childhood cancers. The Whites will represent North Carolina in the foundation’s upcoming fundraising initiative in June. Dee White’s mother, Crystal White, called the foundation’s designation an honor, though one she said she wished the family never had to earn.
