Bracelets, necklaces and figurines were on sale to raise money for children's cancer research at City Hall last month, thanks to the initiative of city residents Raeann Hempel and Nora Elliott.

Hempel, 50, told The Jersey Journal at the event that all proceeds will be going to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit named after a 4-year-old girl who, after being diagnosed with cancer, started a lemonade stand in front of her Connecticut home to raise money to fight cancer.

"I just feel every child deserves a second chance at life," Hempel said, when asked about her desire to donate to the nonprofit. "(The children) didn't ask to be born fighting cancer. They can't help themselves."

Hempel and Elliot said they have raised almost $1,000 since they started raising money last year. Within the next year, they're hoping to expand their fundraising efforts into Union City and raise a total of $10,000, Hempel said.
