Sam Anthony never knew a child with cancer when he heard about Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

“I woke up one morning. It was on CNN and it touched me like nothing ever touched me before,” said Anthony, a former food services and retail manager.

Learning about the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has marked a new chapter in Anthony’s life since he set up his first stand about seven months ago at an Augusta Applebee’s restaurant.

At 4 years old, Alexandra “Alex” Scott set up her first lemonade stand to help children like herself who had cancer. With help from others, Alex raised more than $1 million while battling the neuroblastoma that took her life when she was only 8.

Anthony said he’s working on a volunteer basis with the foundation, which is monitoring his progress with the cause in Augusta.

The lemonade – hand-squeezed with only water and lots of sugar, like Alex made it – is free. Those who stop by the stand are invited to make a donation, 100 percent of which goes to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Founda-tion in Wynnewood, Pa., Anthony said.

The stand, set up on Broad Street in front of Firehouse Bar on Friday, missed a few passers-by because of the early rain, but Anthony said he hoped to make up the difference by staying open until 11 p.m.

Anthony said Firehouse owner Josh Williamson welcomed him to set up in front of the bar at 1147 Broad St. during the monthly First Friday event that brings extra people to downtown Augusta.

“It’s an outside event, a beautiful day,” Anthony said. “That’s where we want to be to provide awareness.”
