At age 4, she repeatedly pleaded with her parents to start a lemonade stand. When her mother offered to buy her whatever she wanted, Alex said she wanted to raise money for other kids with cancer and the hospital treating them.
What began as a neighborhood effort attracted so much national publicity, including appearances on the "Today" show and Oprah Winfrey, that thousands of other children started their own lemonade stands and sent Alex the money. Winfrey and other businesses joined in, helping Alex reach her goal of raising $1 million before she died on Aug. 1, 2004, at age 8.
