EZ Powell recently celebrated a major milestone with a vacation in Hawaii, where he had the chance to swim, play on the beach and do most of the things other 5-year-old boys might do for fun.
“We had a fabulous week,” said Alex Porrata, EZ’s mother. “I’m so grateful that EZ was strong enough to do the things he wanted. It was his wish.”
The Bay Area Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation surprised EZ and his family with a week’s vacation at Disney El Lanai in Hawaii. The chance to have fun and to see EZ smiling was a great change after a traumatic year for the family from Inverness.
EZ was diagnosed on Jan. 14, 2014 with Stage 4 embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a virulent cancer rarely found in children in which tumors grow in the muscles and can spread to the rest of the body. Doctors estimate only 1 in 500,000 children are diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma. The cure rate is only 20 percent in Stage 4 patients EZ’s age.
