Did you know CANCER is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States? Yet, childhood cancer research is vastly UNDERFUNDED. Kids can’t fight childhood cancer alone. So, my wife and I have decided to do something about it. And we need your HELP!
We are running the Disneyland Half Marathon with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. We run in hopes that one day a sick child will live to do the same. Our GOAL is to bring awareness to childhood cancer, to raise money to fund research, new treatments, and to support the quality of life and care. Alex’s story, in addition to our friends and family members, who are fighting cancer, inspired us to act.
What is Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF)? Shortly before her first birthday, Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer. She appeared to be beating the odds, until the shattering discovery within the next year that her tumors had started growing again. In the year 2000, the day after her fourth birthday, Alex received a stem cell transplant and informed her mother, "when I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand." She said she wanted to give the money to doctors to allow them to "help other kids, like they helped me." True to her word, she held her first lemonade stand later that year with the help of her older brother and raised an amazing $2,000 for "her hospital." In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised more than $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex's family - including brothers Patrick, Eddie, and Joey - and supporters around the world are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. http://youtu.be/9PSSuFQ48e0
Where does the money go? The ALSF has a complementary approach and focus on three different areas. The first, early career research by engaging researchers early in their career leading to long-term commitments to find cures. Secondly, research accelerator by advancing the pace of innovative research. And lastly, quality of life and care by improving the quality of life and care for children and their families. http://www.alexslemonade.org/grants
Our hearts break for children (and their families) affected by cancer. Kids should be busy running around, playing dress up, and building forts; not learning how to hold still while an IV line is being put in for the umpteenth time. PLEASE join us and lets help to change the world for one.
