Lane is a happy, funny 20 month old little girl who is an identical twin to Ella. She loves to eat popcorn and drink milk. She enjoys dancing and jumping on the trampoline.
Lane was diagnosed with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome shortly after birth. She was born premature at 33 weeks and doctors in the NICU called Genetics due to her macroglossia (enlarged tongue), hypoglycemia and ear pits. DNA confirmed her diagnosis 6 weeks later and she has been having quarterly ultrasounds and bloodwork ever since looking for tumors. In February 2014, a mass was found on Lane's kidney and her family feared the worse but luckily it was a complex cyst.
Lane had a tongue reduction in May 2014 and continues having quarterly blood draws and ultrasounds to monitor for tumors.
Her mother hopes to spread awareness about BWS so other parents can be properly informed when they get a diagnosis. She hopes that further research will open the doors to help all children with Wilms' tumors and heptoblastoma.
Lane is their hero because she has opened my eyes to such a bigger, brighter world. It was so scary getting a syndrome diagnosis but Lane has always shown us that it's not scary to her- it’s a part of her, not who she is - and she is happy all the same. She has a bright future and her family is happy to be along for the ride.
The best resource and comfort Lane’s mom found was in an online support group on Facebook. The Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome group is amazing!
