BWS Hero: Bianca Fernandez

Bianca Fernandez

Bianca is a very lively baby. She likes watching Peppa Pig, listening to nursery songs (which she all calls E-I-E-I-O) and be read baby books and stories. Bianca was diagnosed with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome one month after she was born.

Doctors couldn't explain the big tummy Bianca had had since she was born. When she was 8 months old, a side of her tummy became harder, so her worried parents brought her to the emergency room of their local hospital, where she was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma.

Bianca went through chemotherapy. Since the tumor didn't shrink, she had a hepatic chemoembolization procedure and a resection, which had to be halted. Bianca was consequently immediately placed on an emergency transplant list. She had a successful liver transplant, followed by a further round of chemo in October. Since then she's been on immuno-suppressant drugs, and unfortunately she's been back to the hospital a few times because of bacterial infections. She has had some hearing impairment as a side effect of treatment.

Bianca’s family hopes she will not contract frequent infections and she can lead as normal a life as possible. They also hope that ALSF will raise the profile of the Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome and its cancer related risks.
