The last days of summer can bring a rush to fit in all those last-minute adventures, get back-to-school shopping and of course, manage those cries of boredom in your household! Mix up the summer monotony by motivating your kids to give back this summer, by helping support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).
ALSF Founder Alex Scott was just 4 years old when she held her first front yard lemonade stand to help other kids with cancer to feel better. Her lemonade stand kicked off a movement of kids (and people of all ages) helping other kids through big and small acts of kindness. Alex believed everyone could make a difference and ALSF believes this too!
As summer winds down, your kids can carry on Alex’s legacy and join other kids all over the U.S. (and world) to give back, flex their creativity and help find a cure for childhood cancer.
Here are 5 ways your kids can give back this summer:
1. Host a Lemonade Stand
Want to encourage your budding chefs and entrepreneurs? Have them host a lemonade stand! You can host a stand anytime and anywhere (like on your front lawn). To keep it simple, just grab a table and make some lemonade stand signs. Feeling crafty? Go big with decorations or build a lemonade stand from the ground up.
No matter what you do, make sure to register your stand with ALSF. You can access a fundraising page, download printables, get more great ideas and request a stand kit!
2. (Mini) Golf Anywhere
Get your family out on the green or head over to your favorite mini golf course for the Lemon Slice Golf Anywhere Event that offers the opportunity for golfers from across the country to raise money for kids fighting cancer while safely playing on their own terms.
During the month of August, participants can creatively raise money for ALSF while playing golf at any course. Ways to raise funds include donating the proceeds of a wager on a difficult hole, donating the fee it would cost to play a round or the amount it would cost to grab lunch or ice cream after your mini round. Learn more, register and check out our fundraising tips for more ideas!
3. Plan for The Million Mile
Every September, ALSF goes the distance for kids with cancer with The Million Mile! All month long, your family can log miles, plan hikes and family walks, fundraise and raise awareness of the need for childhood cancer research. Use the summer to plan how you will log your miles, organize weekend walks for September and to recruit more members to your Million Mile Team. Learn more about The Million Mile here.
4. Become a Champion
Have young athletes? Get them involved in ALSF’s Champions for Kids with Cancer! Whether your kids are basketball players scoring points, goalies making saves, baseball players stealing home, or swimmers doing laps, when they sign up to be a Champion, they can make a difference for other kids.
Your athletes can sign up and set up a goal for whatever stat you want to track. Then, share your stats all season long while asking friends and family to donate. Learn more here.
5. Share Alex’s Story
Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand is a true story about Alex, written by her parents with Alex's help. Get a copy of the book from our gift shop or catch this great video reading of the book. Pass the book along to other families you know, drop one off at your local Littlest Libraries for your community to enjoy, or make a plan to share the book when school starts again.
