When a child is diagnosed with cancer, talking to their siblings and young friends can seem very intimidating. However, educating other children about the diagnosis can help foster a supportive and encouraging environment for the diagnosed child, while also helping friends and siblings who may also be confused and scared.

It is essential for children to receive honest, age-appropriate information. Children who are not given the facts will often invent worst-case scenarios. Talking about cancer in a way they understand can decrease the likelihood of misunderstandings.

September brings new beginnings to families everywhere. It’s a new school year and sports, dance and other extracurricular activities begin. It’s also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and around the hallways of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), it is time for The Million Mile, a month-long awareness and fundraising campaign. In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, supporters everywhere join together to track the miles that they walk, run and cycle.

Sixteen years ago, when I did not even know what USC was, or any university for that matter, I was diagnosed with cancer—tumors called astrocytoma were in my spine. I was just 2 years old at diagnosis, so my treatment and recovery plan was naturally placed in the hands of my parents. From that point forward, I lived with and relied on two adults who knew more about my condition than I did.  

For my four long years of high school, I woke up at 5:30 every morning to go to swim practice and then stayed up late nearly every night to finish my chemistry homework. I desperately wanted to get into my dream school, the University of Southern California (USC), nearly 3,000 miles away from my home in Connecticut. And then, I got my acceptance letter — reaching my long-awaited goal. Yet, my struggles were far from over.
