Hi there! My name is Louie, and I have B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-cell ALL). I was diagnosed in August 2023 when I was 2 years old, and I will be in treatment until at least October 2025. I have been through so much- I stopped walking for 4 months, lost my hair, wasn't able to see my friends for almost a year, spent time in the PICU with septic shock, have had countless ER visits and sick days in bed, and I still take chemo medicines every single day. Through it all, I have been so brave and sweet and excited for life, and now, my family and I would like to help other kids while spreading the word about what childhood cancer looks like.
Childhood cancer is more common than you may think: in the U.S., about 1 in 285 kids will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday. 15,000 children and adolescents under the age of 20 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children.
Funding for childhood cancer research is critically important because childhood cancers are different from adult cancers, requiring specialized research and treatments. Children's bodies react differently to therapies and can cause heartbreaking side effects, and the long-term effects of treatment can be particularly devastating for developing individuals. Despite cancer being a leading cause of death by disease among children, pediatric cancer research receives a disproportionately small amount of overall cancer research funding. Increased funding is essential to develop targeted therapies that are less toxic, improve survival rates, and minimize the long-term side effects that childhood cancer survivors often endure.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand was founded by an incredibly brave little girl who raised an extraordinary amount of money for childhood cancer research while fighting her own losing battle with cancer. We are inspired by her to raise money to go towards groundbreaking cancer research and supporting families as they care for their sick children.
