Can you help me donate to childhood cancer research? What if I told you I would run up the stairs of the tallest building in Texas for it?
On March 28, Kaitlyn and I will be climbing the stairs of Chase Tower as part of The Lemon Climb Houston in order to raise money to help Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
The history of Alex's Lemonade Stand inspires me and is close to my heart. Alex Scott, of Bala Cynwyd, PA, was diagnosed with childhood cancer before her first birthday, and when she was four, she set up a lemonade stand in her front yard with a plan to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. As news spread, other kids started their own lemonade stands to donate to her cause. In 2004, when Alex passed away at the age of eight, her stand and inspiration had raised over $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life.
Afleet Alex, a thoroughbred racehorse from Philadelphia, is one of my favorite racehorses and one of the earliest "celebrity" supporters of Alex's Lemonade Stand. There were lemonade stands at races, and whenever the colt won, his team would donate to the charity. Afleet Alex's performance in the 2005 Preakness Stakes was one of the best races a horse had ever run on the Triple Crown stage. Afleet Alex was sideswiped at the top of the stretch, he nearly went to his knees, his nose came within an inch of the dirt, and he managed to pick himself up and charge to an unforgettable victory. His victory, like the continued determination of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, exemplifies the heart of a champion - always getting back up and fighting, no matter what challenges came before or lay ahead.
The money you donate to our climb will pay for research to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. If you're in Houston, you can also climb the stairs with us as part of our team.
Thank you for reading all of this, and I hope you'll join us in making lemonade out of lemons.
