When
Two years ago, the city of San Francisco was inspired to transform itself into Gotham City to bring one of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area’s most elaborate wishes come to life for Miles Scott, a survivor of lymphoblastic leukemia. With the help of the San Francisco Police Chief and the Mayor’s Office, and with the support of 25,000 fans, Miles became Batkid. Over the course of a day, throughout San Francisco, he fought super-villains and rescued citizens while thousands of people cheered him on. Around the globe, through social media, millions more were inspired by his adventures as Batkid, and many more continue to be inspired through the Batkid Begins documentary, directed by Dana Nachman, and the forthcoming feature film adaptation produced by and starring Julia Roberts.
Now, a group of Batkid’s supporters are gearing up to celebrate the two year anniversary of the event on November 15th, 2015. Using the augmented reality game +Ingress created by +Niantic Labs, Bay Area Ingress players will join forces to create a piece of virtual artwork over the streets of San Francisco.
Together, the game’s opposing factions came up with an idea to virtually emblazon the Bat-Signal over the city’s streets, with a beam emanating from city hall that sends the bat symbol over one of the city’s most volatile in-game areas.
Ingress gameplay consists of capturing portals which are located at places of popular significance, such as landmarks, monuments, and public art, places that are all around us, all the time. By capturing these portals and linking them to create fields over geographical areas in pre-designed patterns, players will use the fields to create the Bat-Signal artwork over downtown San Francisco.
In honor of Miles Scott we are hosting a fundraiser to help Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation move one step closer to finding a cure for all children with cancer! You can join us by helping me plan this event, attending the event, or making a donation right to this page. The money you donate will pay for research to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. Please help kids and their families by providing desperately needed hope! Thanks for your support.
Please consider donating to Make-a-Wish Foundation as well.
