On January 12, 2014, I will be running in the Walt Disney World Marathon. Although this is not my first marathon, it will be the first time I am running for an incredible cause…to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures, and to encourage and empower others to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.
I will be running for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF). ALSF emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). Shortly before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. At the age of 4, Alex told her parents she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Her first lemonade stand raised an amazing $2,000 in one day! While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As new spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands--donating the proceeds to her cause. In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised more than $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life.
Since Alex was diagnosed in 1997, over 2 million more children worldwide have suffered because of cancer. In fact, one in 330 children will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 20. Despite this, less than 5% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers. This is why your support is so important. Please support me by donating to this great cause. For every dollar raised, at least 90 cents will be spent on research programs. Please share this page with your friends and family, so together we can join Alex in this fight.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Best,
Lee Ann
